dashed against the boat. The disciples pulled at the oars with all
their might, but it did no good. If the boat were broken to pieces, they would never see land again.
Several disciples knew the sea well. They had seen it rage before, but this time they were completely helpless in the power of the
storm.
What should they do? Just then a great wave swept over the boat and flooded it with water. Now the boat would sink. How afraid
they were!
Jesus was so tired from teaching the people all day that he had fallen asleep. The storm didn't seem to bother him a bit.
At first the disciples did not want to wake him. They knew how tired he was. Now that the boat was about to sink, they ran to him
and cried out, "Master, don't you care if we die in this storm?"
Jesus opened his eyes and looked into their frightened faces. He asked, "Why are you so afraid? Don't you have any faith?"
As the disciples watched, Jesus stood up and spoke to the wind and the sea, "Peace, be still." At the sound of his voice the storm
stilled. The sea became quiet and calm.
How amazed the disciples were'! They asked one another, "What kind of man is he that even the wind and the sea obey him?" And
they thought much about the Master's great power.
